When you manage a childcare business, it is important to choose childcare furniture and childcare supplies that are designed to keep children safe - while making your job easier

When you manage a childcare business, it is important to choose childcare furniture and childcare supplies that are designed to keep children safe – while making your job easier.

Childcare Furniture: Safety Considerations

Keeping in mind the old adage that prevention is the best cure, choose childcare furniture with your children in mind. Purchase the proper height tables and chairs so that getting up and down from the table is safe and easy for your children. Avoid furniture with sharp edges and corners; rounded edges are best and will prevent many accidents.

Slippery floors can also be an avoidable issue. The best flooring for a childcare center is carpeting. If you have hardwood floors or tile, cover it with non-slip area rugs to protect children when they fall. The rugs will also provide a warm, soft place to play.

Book shelves and toy shelves are essential childcare furniture, as they provide for organization and create more space within the room. However, they can also be hazardous if you have children in your childcare who like to climb. Avoid this issue by only using shelves that are about the same height as most of the children in your care, and be certain that all shelves are secured to the wall behind them.

Another consideration when choosing childcare furniture is how well the furniture is constructed and what types of materials were used. In general, avoid using painted furniture or furniture made from pressed board that is known to off-gas such as mdf. In addition, periodically check all childcare furniture for loose screws, protruding nails and splintering wood.

Childcare Supplies: Important Details

When picking out childcare supplies such as toys and games, keep the safety of the children foremost in your mind. Avoid childcare supplies that are made cheaply and don’t contain a list of ingredients. Purchase well known brand name childcare supplies whenever possible. This especially holds true for art supplies such as paints and play dough.

Cheaply made toys and games present other concerns. Small, easily broken plastic parts can be dangerous to young children. A good rule of thumb is not to purchase any childcare supplies with parts small enough to be put in a child’s mouth. Wooden blocks, toys and puzzles are often the best choice in childcare supplies because they are safe, sturdy and will last a long time.

Other childcare supplies to consider are cleaning supplies. While it is important to clean and disinfect all areas of the childcare, including toys and games, on a regular basis, avoid cleaning supplies made with harsh or toxic chemicals.

Childcare Safety Plan

The emergency safety plan is a critical component to keeping your students safe. While a first-aid kit is a good place to start, you need to create a plan in case of an emergency, such as a natural disaster or fire. Once you have a plan, communicate it to the families served by your childcare.

Another important safety measure is to conduct background checks on every individual you employ, including yourself. This will give you and the families you serve peace of mind.

In addition, be wary of strangers coming to pick up a child from your childcare. Be prepared to place a phone call to a parent and demand photo ID if the person picking up a child is unfamiliar to you. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when children are concerned.

These tips are a simple, yet helpful guide for childcare providers when choosing childcare furniture and childcare supplies, as well as developing safety guidelines and emergency plans.

You could spend your whole life learning about ADHD. I sometimes think I have! Here are a few shortcuts to getting through the ADHD jungle.

Diet and ADHD

Can sugar, candy and pop increase hyperactivity in ADHD kids? Very probably not. I can tell you though that there is now a study which shows that fish oils (Omega 3) can actually improve ADHD kids’ learning abilities and attention spans.

The study was done by the University of South Australia. They gave 132 children the fish oils together with evening primrose oil and they found that about 50% showed definite improvement in ADHD symptoms. This is a higher success rate than Ritalin, which as you know is an amphetamine like drug (methylphenidate) and which has numerous sinister side effects which range from weight issues to depression and insomnia.

Did you know that certain studies have shown that ADHD children seem to have higher levels of phthalates in their urine? These phthalates are contained in cling film, food and beverage packaging, cosmetics, shower curtains and of course toys. I am not saying that these chemical plasticizers are causing ADHD but they do seem to have an effect on the severity of ADHD symptoms.

How can you avoid them? You can buy safer plastics with the PETE label and this applies especially to toys for kids. In addition more fresh organic foods can be bought and thus help you to avoid this risky plastic material. The FDA is actually under pressure now to issue some warnings and they say more studies need to be done.

ADHD Meds

It is a pity that the FDA is not so rigorous about powerful mind altering drugs prescribed in tons across the nation for ADHD children, who are too hyperactive and inattentive for our society. They therefore have to be medicated. There is a sinister ring to all this but many parents have taken steps to learn about ADHD now, and they will have nothing to do with meds which cause more problems for their kids than they solve.

While learning about ADHD, they are more and more convinced that there is a safer alternative. Homeopathy has been scorned by many in the medical community but they would do well to take a leaf out of the UK’s attitude to complementary medicine which is gaining great popularity over there. Many medical centres offer alternatives to conventional medicines. They happily share the same roof and have a much more tolerant attitude to the fact that alternatives are possible and that in many cases, such as learning about ADHD, there can be a safer, more effective solution. You can find out about this safer and cheaper solution from the link below this article.

An active preschooler is a preschooler who is learning. Getting preschool activities for teachers can be a tough task for any principle or educator who is looking to expand their preschool curriculum. Not only do you need to make sure that the children get the right amount of outside play time, but you also need to make sure that they are doing puzzles and games that challenge their mental capacity.

So what does a preschool teacher do to make sure that the preschoolers are doing the right activities that are challenging and productive? Well simply, just make sure the children are involved and being engaged at a level that they find interesting and fun.

When the preschooler’s start losing interest is when they either think the activity is not fun or interesting. So make sure that the activities are fun for the group. One way that this can be done is to break the preschool class up into groups of interest or stations (as I like to call them). You could have a group that like to color, a group that likes to do puzzles, and a group that likes to finger paint. After 30 or 45 minutes move the groups around to a different station of interest and let them try it.

Some other stations that you could have is a bingo station, which helps the children learn number recognition. Go-Fish station is a good one for shapes, numbers, or animals dependent on the type of cards used. These are all great preschool ideas for teacher that can help you as an educator, or even a parent engage your preschooler and have a little fun in the process.

Running a childcare service can be very rewarding and also hard work. The following are five suggestions that need to be followed for your childcare business to become a success.

1. There are those who imagine babysitting as a day spent reading storybooks and watching children play. The truth is you will spend much of your time wiping noses, and finding lost socks! People who have had little experience with children should start small. Take care of two or three children in your home for a minimum of three months. After this time, decide if a childcare is truly what you want.

2. Every region/country has laws regarding childcare. It is vital to comply with adult to children ratios, background checks, safety codes and liability insurance. Whether you choose to open your home or lease/rent a building, building and fire codes will need to be met. Talking to a lawyer/solicitor will ensure that you understand and can abide by all regulations. Laws tend to change frequently, soregister your childcare service for regular inspections to confirm total compliance.

3. You will need to take childcare certification courses and a first aid course, too. These courses will enable you to react accordingly to any medical emergency that may arise. Every employee hired must complete these courses as well. Although a child psychology course is not usually required, this knowledge will help you to recognize signs of abuse, learning deficiencies and behavioural problems.

4. You will be required to provide appropriate toys, sleeping arrangements, arts and crafts, and toilet facilities. You will also need to know how children will get to and from school. Consider, too, the hours your childcare business will be open. Some childcares services are open 24 hours to accommodate parents with shift work while others are open only from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

5. Taking a business and a marketing course is another important part of making your childcare a success. A business course will teach you what to charge, how to budget and will educate you in bookkeeping. The marketing course will teach you how to advertise your business effectively.

If you implement these 5 suggestions on starting a childcare service, you have a much better chance of being successful. Running a childcare business is hard but very rewarding work.

Thanks
